FAQs and FEEDBACK

FAQs

1. What topics does the BRJ cover?

A: The BRJ welcomes manuscripts dealing with bilingual education, bilingualism, and language policies in education (e.g., language assessment, policy analysis, instructional research, language politics, biliteracy, language planning, second language learning and teaching, action research, and sociolinguistics). As the official organ of the National Association for Bilingual Education, the journal has a strong interest in matters related to the education of language minority children and youth in the United States, grades K-12, but articles focusing on other countries are often included.

2. Is the BRJ peer reviewed?

A: Yes. We employ a double-blind peer-review process. All manuscripts will normally be sent to three reviewers who have expertise in the topic of the manuscript.

3. What is the acceptance rate for manuscripts?

A: Our current acceptance rate is about 60%. In the future, our goal is to become more selective and to accept no more than 50% of submissions.

4. How many issues does the BRJ publish each year?

A: We publish three issues each year: Spring, Summer, and Fall.

5. How many subscribers does the BRJ have?

A: This may vary according to the membership/subscription programs of the National Association for Bilingual Education, since hardcopy distribution is tied to membership in the association. However, many people access the BRJ online, but we do not keep a record of this.

6. How long does the publication process take, from initial manuscript submission to its appearance in print?

A: It varies. From the time we receive a manuscript until its actual publication, it may take anywhere between 6 and 8 months. Generally, manuscripts received during the summer months take longer than those received during the school year.

7. I did not receive my most recent issue of the BRJ. Whom do I contact?

A: The editors and editorial staff have little to do with subscriptions and distribution. To subscribe, or to request a back issue, please contact the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) office in Washington, DC. Their telephone number is (202) 898-1829. They may also be found online at http://www.nabe.org

8. Are library subscriptions available for the BRJ?

A: Yes. Contact the NABE office as suggested above for details. Many college and university libraries subscribe to the journal, but many do not. We would like to see more libraries take advantage of our publication, the oldest and best known journal in its field in the United States.

9. Are manuscripts to be mailed to the Washington office of NABE or to the editorial offices in Arizona?

A: Neither. The BRJ no longer accepts manuscripts in hardcopy. All manuscripts should be sent, as an e-mail attachment, to: brj@asu.edu (Please see our submission guidelines  for more information.)
